Over the years I have picked up multiple e-mail addresses from various institutions and organizations. I’ve kept these active on the principle that the mail client I use should be able to handle these changes more seamlessly than the people who write to me. However, this assumption has been heavily challenged this year. Coupled with the fact that my preferred address (a Yahoo pop account) has recently become painfully slow, I have decided to have an e-mail rethink!

From now on my new address will be vince@vsmith.info. As with previous changes I’ll continue to receive mail from all my old addresses, but from 2008 I will only be sending mail via vince@vsmith.info and this will be my preferred mail address. I am using Google Apps to do this, which allows me to use my domain name (vsmith.info) and take advantage of Google Mail’s functionality. Google’s spam filter, IMAP, and their 5.6GB of space were the deciding factors in my choice of GMail.
